Guide To Old World Sculptures
Sculptures have been present and in existence for hundreds of years. All those who have gone before us have captured certain events or persons in a timeless piece through a sculpture. Sculptures are like a true-to-life pictures that brings various emotions in different individuals.
Although the definition and technique in creating sculptures have changed over the years, it is important to understand its development throughout history.
Humans were using drawings and symbols well before they had perfected the art of communication via the spoken word. This concept has had a big influence on the creation of sculptures. With sculptures they are able to express their emotions without having to actually say them. Through their artwork, sculptors are able to communicate their expressions and opinions.
During ancient times, sculptures were made not for the enjoyment of other people or as works of art. They were made to be used for religious ceremonies or to pay homage to a great king or leader. It was also made to pay homage to the gods. Egypt and several regions in Mesopotamia practiced this tradition.
Sculptors utilized various methods to produce unique styles that gave their works an individualized look. The method was developed by the Ancient Greeks in creating sculptures that were vertical and self-supporting. It was during the classical and Hellenistic periods that sculptures were used to portray what an ideal human body is. The mastery of Greeks in sculpture making had a great influence in Europe's art for many years.
On the other hand, Romans drew inspiration from Greek sculptures which is why they almost look alike. However, the main difference between Greek and Roman sculptures is that Romans create sculptures to represent a particular person rather than a general human form. Nowadays, both Greek and Romany styles in creating sculptures have influenced the art form. They were also great influences in other art forms that evolved from sculpture making; their influence can be found in everything from contemporary wall art sculptures, metal wall hangings and even coffee metal wall art.
Sculptures on the European continent during the Romanesque and Gothic period were used in plentiful supply. One can find several sculptures displayed in a cathedral. They were utilized as figures that would tell a story.
It was during the Renaissance period that sculptures were made as works of art. It was also during this time that Italian sculptures were recognized. Due to this fact, Florence, Italy, became the hub for sculptors; this is evidenced today by the great number of sculptures found throughout this historical city.
Aside from Italy, the Renaissance style also grew in other European regions like Belgium, France and Germany. This wide influence can still be found today in sculptures that include wall art sculptures which are modern versions of a sculpture.
Over the years, sculptures have remained to be a permanent part of the arts and a country's heritage. Many have taken inspiration or have been influenced by these styles of sculptures in modern day art from wall art sculptures to furniture making. It is no wonder that although centuries have passed people still appreciate the mastery and skill it takes to create one of these masterpieces.
