A Brief Overview Of The History Of Graphic Design
Design, pattern and shape were all essential design elements used by graphic illustrators towards the end of the 1800s. When he died, the man who so influenced graphic design and its elements was a mere 26 years of age. Aubrey Beardsley made his mark on 19th century aestheticism with his unique expression of the art nouveau style. His style has made several resurgences in the modern age. Oscar Wilde was a significant persona in the world of literature at that time, and though he stirred controversy, he was a vocal supporter of a wide range of artistic genres, holding the belief that art itself was a justifiable goal and should not be subjected to judgments predicated on morals and ethics. One of Wilde's most peculiar and controversial stories was illustrated, at his request, by this young man of whom we have been speaking. Wilde chose foreboding titillation juxtaposed with graceful, sweeping lines to bring more even controversy to his piece. He added patterns and ingenious contortion.
His work features dramatic inter-relationships of black and white. He used wide borders and planes or shadows which contrasted with the delicate patterns etched upon a white surface. Large, sweeping, winding curves generate movement across Wilde's pages. His pieces tend to be asymmetrical. While the main figures in these drawings are usually defined by outlines alone, the objects that surround them are usually more visually complicated. It is that interplay between something simple and something complicated that creates the true strength of his work.
Many artists in the 1800s were influenced by items which were being imported from Asia, in addition to a focus on Renaissance decor and medieval artworks. Many artists in both the United States and Europe have imitated the work of this young illustrator, and he became quite well-known as a direct result of his illustrations appearing in quite a few famous publications. By the end of the 1800s, commercial ad imagery and poster art began to divide into separate forms of art. Posters were some of the first things to be printed in color, all of the books still being printed in black and white. Design of posters typically concentrated on a single image, created to attract attention using color and form. Kept brief and to the point were the words which provided information about the product. Recognizing the way to catch somebody's attention was to simplify, he continued to keep his shapes both flat and simple, while his colors were powerful. The lines produced by this artist were usually somewhat halting and broken, not unlike those of an impressionist's work. This style became known as the first inklings of the Art Nouveau poster style.
Later illustrators employed bolder, smoother lines, creating a style that evolved into what is now known as the Art Nouveau Poster Style. His work is always characterized by willowy young girls in rather loose clothing, and with their hair that's long, flowing, and billows out in capricious forms. Yet a different successful and well known art nouveau designer's posters always proved to be elegant, narrow strips with typically one entire length female figure. There are other styles and pieces as well. Celtic motifs, Byzantine mosaics, Hebrew lettering, Arab and Moorish decoration, and Japanese wood cuts are all considered complex and elaborate patterns rendered on a wide assortment of canvases.
Many reproductions of these artists exist in books and as lithographs or prints that are suitable for framing. Additionally, dealers specializing in the sale of 1800's and early 1900's poster art exist. Large international antique shows often feature these dealers. Original examples that have been well-maintained can easily cost hundreds, or even upwards of several thousand dollars.
