Original Drawing

Is your refrigerator full of kids drawings and paintings?
Â
Running out of wall space for your little Picasso? Is your refrigerator at its maximum magnet capacity? If you've used all available refridgerator and bulletin board space, don't worry! There are lots of ways to display your children's artwork.
Step 1 is to create digital files of your young artist's drawing, painting or print. That way you can toss the originals if you need to and still have a copy on a disk or your computer to enjoy for years to come. The original drawing or painting needs to be scanned.. If you don't have a scanner, you can go to any business that prints photos or provides copy services and they can scan your items and put them on a disk for you pretty inexpensively. If you are using a copy service to scan your artwork, it's a good idea to grab several pieces and have them all doen at the same time.
The resolution of the images is important and what you choose depends on what you want to use them for and the final size they need to be. The DPI, or dots per inch, refers to the physical size of an image when it is reproduced on paper or displayed on a monitor. Any image that is to be used on a printed piece such as a bag, mousepad or mug needs to be scanned at a high resolution of 150 dpi or higher. If the images will stay on a computer screen or end up on a website, 72 dpi will be plenty.
If you're not sure how you will use the images, always scan them at the highest quality available.
A flatbed scanner work best for digitizing artwork. Taking a photo of the piece doesn't work as well. The scanner presses the artwork flat and the light source is even across the entire surface of the piece so it will look as much like the original as possible.
After you digitize your kid's masterpiece, you can use the image for virtually anything.
- Make a computer “wallpaper†or screensaver
- Imprint a mug or hat
- Have a photo bag or photo purse made
- Have it made into a jigsaw puzzle
- Create a greeting card
- Have the picture put on a mousepad
There are several companies that will imprint the art onto a huge variety of items for you. Many companies have online stores that make it easy to upload your file. Most have design tools on their site that will allow you to re-size the file, or they may do it for you.
Photo gifts are becoming more and more popular so you can also share your kids drawings with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and teachers. It's a great way to personalize a gift. Is dad hard to buy for? Then make sure his coffee mug or mousepad has a reminder of his kid's talent where he can see it during the work day.
And of course, you can always have it put on a magnet to hold the next masterpiece!
