Abstract art: Historic and modern
Abstract art of the modern day has derived a lot from those of the old days mainly because of their representation of some aspect of a subjective truth which tends to be more plastic and supple than an objective reality in the natural world. It mainly uses abstract shapes and colours that are subjectively seen or perceived within by the artist and reproduced on canvas from that basis.
Since the emergence of the abstract movement in Europe in the early 20th century, there has been a steady revitalization of this kind of art around the world. This has transcended mere painting and has transcended to even sculpture, writing, poetry and even digital art in the modern day. Many art experts believe that, in its purest form, abstract art does not correspond to something pre-existent in the material world and is purely subjective. Within this there are two methods or varieties if you will. One method involves picking a certain theme or object in nature or in the real world and abstracting it to a point where it becomes a subjective perception rather than an objective something. It is as if turning a reality into a concept form. The second method is a purely subjective formation from one's own aesthetic-imaginative-perceptive mind with no particular reference to any objective reality. Further distinctions can be drawn as to geometric abstractions versus more fluid and flexible abstractions. This would depend if the abstraction is from a purely mental level or from a emotional-aesthetic level of a person. It is much like the difference between a calculated metrical poet and a free-flowing blank verse poet.
The Avant-garde movement of the later 19th century is largely responsible for spurring the abstract movement. It can also be closely related to the impressionist and the surrealist movements which were all sort of parallel developments. There was a conscious shift from precise objective forms and methods in painting to more abstract yet free-flowing creativity from within which focused more on the process itself and captured emotions with colours and so on. It represented a revolution of consciousness through Europe when artists chucked the conventions aside and tried merely to capture the essence of things. One could say it was a dematerialization of form. Emotions and intuitions replaced rigid aesthesis and logical process.
With today's technology for photo-editing and modification available even on one's own mobile phone, almost everybody can be an artist by simply playing around with the tools and controls. The costs of producing one such ‘abstract' art has significantly gone down as anyone with a cell phone or a computer, which are common household products, can create. However, despite the fact that one may forego the ability to draw or sketch well in abstract art in the modern sense, one always needs to be a poet, dreamer and a visionary within. These are the qualities that set apart the adepts from the amateurs.
