What Gothic Interior Design Might Look Like
'It takes one to know one, ' they say. That's got to be true of goths. If you don't live the lifestyle or have one living in your home, you can only guess at how they decorate their homes. Gothic fashion gives you a decent idea, though.
It's fairly obvious that the color of choice for gothics is black. Their entire wardrobe (and many of them have large ones) is black. They even wear black lipstick. The only things that break up this color scheme are their silver jewelry and the occasional touch of vermilion. It's not too much of a stretch to conclude that a goth would have a black dining room set with an ornate silver candelabra in their home.
Their china would be black, of course, and the silverware would be expensive and ornate, perhaps even antique. Think about how Count Dracula would decorate his castle's cavernous dining hall and you get a good idea of how it would look.
The living room would follow the same monochromatic color scheme. Our hypothetical wealthy goth, perhaps a lead singer in a successful gothic band, would have the finest, most luxurious furniture, with black leather couches and chairs. The black glass coffee table would be custom made out of metal, with ornate detailing. The TV set would be large and minimalistic, since there's no such thing as a gothic style television set.
The same color scheme, if that's what you call it, would apply in the bedroom. If they didn't have a black four poster bed, it would probably be a black full size loft bed.
The reason for the loft bed would be because they long to sleep hanging from the ceiling, like bats. Not being bats, however, and not having the power to change into them, they would settle for the next best option: to sleep close to the ceiling.
The gothic subculture is a fascinating one. When it first burst on the scene, nobody thought it would last, but it has. There are gothics in virtually every major city in the world. They don't mingle with outsiders much, so they are little understood and many people even fear them.
Are they nihilistic or satanic? Who knows? The truth is, many of them dress up in their gothic clothes on the weekends and have straight jobs during the week. You could have a sales meeting with one on friday afternoon and not recognize them on the streets that night.
The insides of their homes may not look at all like that envisioned here. In fact, most of them probably live with their families in middle class homes. It's anybody's guess. If nothing else, gothics are thought provoking. That alone makes it worth having them as neighbors, even if they never invite you over for dinner.
