Literature was often related to the glory or tragedy of war, i.e. The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Trojan Women, The History of the Persian Wars by Herodotos, The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydites, and The Anabasis by Xenophon, to list a few. Most of the Philosophers were also at some time soldiers, so their philosophy reflects the need for preparation for war.
