Is there more talent needed in taking or the realizing of the photographs you took, which ones are truly art?
I just ran across some photos from on flickr that were truly amazing and worthy of pointing my google screen saver too. I'm sure this photographer has taken thousands of pictures but the ones selected really spoke to me. I'm curious as to why.
Answer:
A lot has to do with how a photographer "sees". We all "see" differently, based on our experiences, values, interests.
You and I could be standing side by side looking at a scene and I might see a beautiful abstract pattern in an old tree stump and make an exposure. You might see only an old tree stump. Or, you might see the moss on the old tree stump and think it worth an exposure.
I often look for abstract patterns - reflections in disturbed water, the grain structure of old wood*, the coarse texture of stone*, shadows, shapes in twisted, gnarled vines. I also look for color. I visualize a scene in black & white and capture it.
IMO the equipment is a small part of the equation.
* Best seen with strong sidelighting, although you can find a lot of texture in these subjects when the sun is high in the sky and at a slight angle to your subjects.

Fine art photography is an artistic medium through which a photographer uses his or her creative vision to express the perceptions and emotions developed primarily for aesthetics and judged for its beauty and meaningfulness.
