Frequently Asked Questions...
Art Critique needed...What do you think?
This is a painting that is the new rage on eBay. It is an ACEO. (Art Card Editon & Original.) They are the size of baseball trading cards. It is done in watercolor. Do you think it looks good like it is, or are the details too detailed for water color? http://cm.ebay.com/cm/ck/1065-29296-2357-0?uid=40900932&site=0&ver=LCA080805&item=160002396957&lk=URL
I think it depends on taste...If you search ACEO Mermaids on eBay there are all sorts. Which is better in your opinon-Water color the old fashioned way with different values of colors - or detail done with a size 0 brush or watercolor pencil accenting with the regular watercolor wash?
Answer:
Obviously, this is primarily a question of taste. The folksy style of this watercolor is not done is a style I enjoy, but that doesn't mean you might not enjoy it. The artist lists it as created in the style of "Realism," but I would suggest "Folk Art" as a better style. I agree with the "Fantasy" tag being attached to this image, as the colors and imagery denote fantasy much more so than realism.
You asked if the details are too detailed for watercolor. I think the lines are a bit heavy for typical watercolor paintings. In fact, at first glance I thought it was created in pastel or crayon, not watercolor.
There is something off with the shape of the girl's face, which bugs me enough that I would not bid on this image. But as I said before, art is personal, so if you enjoy the image, go for it!
